KABUL (Pajhwok): Afghanistan’s apex court on Saturday announced that the Shawwal moon was sighted in various provinces of the country, hence Eid-ul-Fitr will be celebrated on Sunday, May 1.
Acting Government Spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid wrote on his Twitter account late last night that the Supreme Court declared Sunday the first day of Eid-ul-Fitr.
Meanwhile, a statement issued by the Supreme Court said that 27 people in Farah, Ghazni, Kandahar and Ghor provinces had seen the crescent and presented evidence to the committee.
Earlier, Saudi Arabia’s Supreme Court ruled that Shawwal moon has not been sighted in any part of the country and Monday as the first day of Eid-ul-Fitr.
The United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Qatar, Yemen, Sudan, Jordan and a number of other Islamic countries will also celebrate the first day of Eid on Monday.
