Kapisa: Expired foods sales prompt public complaints

MAHMOOD RAQI (Pajhwok): Some residents of central Kapisa province claim shopkeepers are selling expired food items, with the government failing to crack down on the practice.

Abdullah, hailing from Hisa-i-Awal Kohistan district, told Pajhwok Afghan News shopkeepers were selling people expired food items.

He called the expired eatables harmful to human health, saying their consumption caused various diseases.

“One day, I purchased dried milk for my baby from a shop near my house. It tasted bitter,” he added.

Enayatullah, another resident of the province, also grumbled about the sale of expired food items and the government’s inability to control the market.

He urged the officials concerned to collect expired items from the market and deal with violators in accordance with the law.

Meanwhile, municipality officials also acknowledged the problem and promised to address it at the earliest possible.

Maulvi Obaidullah Hassam, mayor of Kapisa said he had repeatedly ordered shopkeepers not to sell expired food items, including beverages.

The mayor promised setting up an independent committee to control the market and collect expired and substandard food.

The mayor warned the shopkeepers ignoring his advice would be dealt with harshly.
