JALALABAD (Pajhwok): In order to avoid traffic congestion, a new road has been constructed at a cost of 6.5 million afghanis in the Torkham town of the Momandara district of eastern Nangarhar province.

The 1150-meter-long and 16-meter-wide dirt road was built in three months and opened yesterday.

Maulvi Yar Mohammad Mohammadi, director of public works in Nangarhar, told Pajhwok Afghan News the road consumed 6.5 million afghanis.

He added that since the road was between the natural stream and the mountain, 50 culverts have been constructed along the route.

He said now trucks would to travel on the road to Torkham instead of the main road, which would help avoid traffic jams in the Torkham bazaar.

On the other hand, truck drivers are happy with the construction of the road but demand that the government allocate funds for asphalting the road.

Ikhlasuddin, a driver, told Pajhwok Afghan News that the road leading to the Torkham gate would be useful for trucks and preventing traffic congestion.

He demanded that the Ministry of Public Works blacktop the road because in rainy season, there would be a lot of obstacles to travel.

The Department of Public Works said it was trying to find budget and asphalt the road.
