GHAZNI CITY (Pajhwok): A man has built a grand mosque and two educational centres for girls and boys at a personal cost of 14 million afghanis in the Muqur district in southern Ghazni province.

Dr Dawood Hemmat, the project financier and head of Sidal Medical Hospital in Kandahar, said construction of the Izzat Qala Ittefaq Grand Mosque and Sarwar Kainat Educational Centres began in 1403 solar year and was completed in 1405.

He said the projects cost a total of 14 million afgahnis. The mosque was built on four jeribs of land and has the capacity to accommodate 1,200 worshippers at a time.

Hemmat said two separate educational centres had also been built alongside the mosque, one for girls and the other for boys, with a combined capacity of 500 students.

He said the projects aimed to provide local residents with a suitable place of worship and create facilities for the religious and educational development of the younger generation.

He added that he planned to undertake further initiatives to improve educational opportunities in the area. These included establishing an orphanage, expanding the existing educational centres and building an educational complex.

Hemmat said Izzat Qala comprised 18 villages whose residents, according to him, had previously had limited access to education and other facilities.

Meanwhile, local residents said the projects had addressed an important community need and would allow children to study in a suitable learning environment closer to home.

Yaqub Sarwari, a resident of the area, told Pajhwok that the locality had previously lacked many facilities because of years of conflict. He said the construction of the mosque and educational centres marked an important change for the community.

The development comes days after another young man from the same area built a school building at his own expense.
