Lyons, Abdullah talk region’s role in Afghanistan

KABUL (Pajhwok): UN Secretary-General's Special Representative for Afghanistan Deborah Lyons held a farewell meeting with former chairman of the High Council for National Reconciliation Dr Abdullah Abdullah.

Both sides highlighted the importance of government inclusivity, counter-terrorism and the key role of regional states in shaping Afghanistan’s future.

In March 2020, Deborah Lyons was appointed as the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) chief.

UNAMA said on its Facebook page that the outgoing diplomat met Dr Abdullah on Saturday.

Dr. Abdullah, who returned to Kabul from India on Saturday, also confirmed in a Facebook post his meeting with Deborah Lyons.

“First I want to thank Lyons for her efforts and support for Afghans and wished her continued success in the future,” he added.
