KABUL (Pajhwok): Farmers in southern Kandahar province say the construction process of green houses has stopped this year.
In the past, every year green houses were built in the province where hundreds of people would get employed and benefited farmers.
Farmers have asked the Agriculture Ministry and aid-providing agencies to resume green houses construction process, saying it is not possible for them to build these facilities alone.
Mir Ajan, a farmer from the Zherai district of Kandahar province, said the process of Green Houses construction had stopped after the fall of the previous government.
He said currently hundreds of Green Houses were available in Kandahar City and some districts in which different types of vegetables were cultivated, adding that still there was need for more green houses.
“I wanted to build a Green House, but I don’t have the financial strength, now I have cultivated a piece of land and borrowed money for the purchase of solar panels.”
Abdullah, another farmer from the Arghandab district said, he constructed three Green Houses on his own expenses, adding that after so much spending he did not reap the yield he expected.
He asked the Agriculture Ministry and aid-providing agencies to resume work on the construction of green houses and provide professional training to farmers.
Kandahar Agriculture Department Senior Official MawlaviShamsurrahman told Pajhwok Afghan News currently 702 Green Houses were functional in the Kandahar, Dand, Daman, Arghandab, Panjwai, Zherai and Maiwand districts which were built in the previous government.
He said 39 Green Houses had been constructed by the Agriculture Ministry and the remaining by aid-providing agencies.
He said: “We have talked to ADA, KRO, CHO and other organisations and they have pledged to cooperate in the construction of Green Houses.”
