Kabul moms share awful stories on Mother’s Day

KABUL (Pajhwok): An elderly widow, who has brought up her children facing immense difficulties and made them successful, complain all her sons and daughters have gone abroad, leaving her all alone.

Pajhwok Afghan News conducted interviews with some mothers on World Mother’s Day. Sherin Gul, 64, is one of the interviewees.

Her eyes welled up as she recalled her sacrifices for the sake of her children, how she brought them up and educated them. Ironically, all of them have left their mother high and dry.

Having lost her husband 35 years ago, she said: “I have since been living a painful life. Now my children have left me alone as they have gone abroad. They didn’t spare a thought for me.”

She said; “I have two daughters and four sons. My daughters are married and my four sons are living abroad. I brought them up facing massive challenges and they have reciprocated in this way.”

Much to her chagrin, none of her sons congratulated Gul this Mother’s Day.

Mari, another widow and a mother of five, said: “I don’t know anything about Mother’s Day, working from dawn to dust in people’s homes and tailoring to support my children.”

With tears rolling down her visage, she said: “My heart is bleeding. Nobody has offered me support after the death of my husband. I decided to work and become a mother and a father for my children.”

Mari revealed: “When my husband died, everyone told me to marry another man. But my conscious did not allow me to leave my children alone. I was forced to work.”

Palwasha, 37, was divorced by her husband due to family violence. She said: “With my spouse having divorced me, Mother’s Day is a black day for me and my children.

“I don’t have good memories of this day. It’s a day when my life was ruined. My husband divorced me on this day.”

She added: “I have six children five daughters and a son. I have only one son, the apple of my eye. He is not with me and I’m bothered about his absence.”

Palwasha said: “At rimes, my former husband talks to me. But I don’t have good memoreis about him. He never understood me and never stood by me.”
