SHIBERGHAN (Pajhwok): The residents of Shiberghan, the capital of northern Jawzjan province, complain the groundwater has plummeted by three meters due to the digging of a large number of deep wells in the city.
They fear ordinary wells in their houses would go dry in the upcoming two years.
Engineer Habibullah, a resident of the city, told Pajhwok Afghan News that too many wells had been dug around the city.
He believed government officials should take an action to prevent digging of more deep wells in the city.
Governor Spokesperson MaulanaFaridon said a delegation had been tasked to address people’s complaints regarding digging of deep wells and irrigation of gardens by some people from deep wells.
He said exact statistics about the number of deep wells in Shiberghan City were not available.
