Badakhshan struggling to contain deadly cholera outbreak

FAIZABAD (Pajhwok): More than 140 people have contracted cholera and two persons lost their lives to the disease in northeastern Badakhshan province.

Qari Ahmad Nazir Nezar, deputy director of public health, told Pajhwok Afghan News cholera cases had been confirmed in 143 people including women and children in the province.

He said that two individuals lost their lives to the virus due to dehydration.

He added the disease was spreading in Baharak, Yaftalha, Kishim and Wakhan districts and that the Public Health Department in cooperation with other institutions had disinfected drinking water with chlorine and had launched awareness in the community and health centers about the disease.

“In case of an increase in cholera disease, 12 beds in the provincial hospital, 10 beds in Baharak and Kishim clinics, as well as necessary medical kits and medicines have been sent to the health centers of the neighboring districts.”

He emphasized that the necessary medicine had been sent to 114 health centers in Badakhshan, but 20 percent of the supplies could not reach their destinations due to traffic congestion, difficult routes and some other problems.
