KABUL (Pajhwok): The National Environmental Protection Agency on Saturday said 20.5 million fruit-bearing and ornamental trees were planted in the country in the past one year.

Hafiz Aziz Rahman, acting head of the agency, said at a government accountability meeting in Kabul that the trees were planted for protection and development of green areas in Kabul and provinces.

He also said 17 of 31 projects worth 195 million dollars in the field of climate change management had been completed, five under construction and nine others had been approved.

“The Global Environmental Facility (GEF) had a total of 4,800 projects to manage the climate change at the global level, of which 31 projects with a value of 195 million dollars were related to Afghanistan”.

He added his department received more than 2.27 million afghanis revenue from the fees of 573 licenses and related matters.

In the past one year,  he said, 379 factories, 105 high-rise buildings, 646 baths, 1277 restaurants, 2088 bakeries, 236 government hospitals and clinics, 164 examination rooms and pharmacies were monitored for fuel, sewage and waste management systems. Among them, 3235 activities were corrected and 35 complaints addressed.
