KABUL (Pajhwok): Afghanistan Women’s Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Roya Hafizi says after the political change in the country, most of the women became jobless but the number of businesswomen almost doubled compared to the past.
In an exclusive interview, Roya Hafizi told Pajhwok Afghan News their chamber remained closed for about seven months after the political change but was reopened on January 20, 2022.
She said with the reopening of the chamber, women’s self-confidence increased, and women who had left their work rejoined it again.
According to her, women have started businesses by establishing small and medium factories.
Hafizi says: “These women have opened small factories making pickles, chutneys, jams and handicrafts with little money, and in general, we can say that businesswomen have invested in dozens of sectors.”
She further adds: “Fortunately, the number of women in professional trades has reached 1,200 from 621 registered with the Chamber of Commerce and Industry five years ago.”
Hafizi called the increase in the number of businesswomen hopeful and said that soon representatives of the chamber would start their activities in four zones and 10 provinces of the country.
She said: “Businesswomen who left the country after the political change and went abroad, their number reaches nearly 200, they are in contact with us and want to return and start their business with Afghanistan Women’s Chamber of Commerce and Industry.”
She urged the caretaker government to cooperate in the provision of permanent jobs, security of women entrepreneurs and marketing their products.
