KANDAHAR (Pajhwok): An entire village was submerged in the Shorabak district of southern Kandahar province after a dam across the Durand Line failed, officials said on Monday.
Kandahar governor’s spokesman Haji Zaid told Pajhwok the dam located across the Durand Line near Shorabak district broke following heavy rain yesterday.
The dam breach sent a torrent of water through Badarzo village, inundating it entirely, he added. He said dozens of houses and clinics of the village had been destroyed but the residents were rescued.
According to him, security personnel tried to reach the area for assistance, but the road has been blocked and they could not reach there. He said the extent of the damage would be determined once the road leading to the area was reopened.
Shorabak residents also said the flood destroyed people’s houses and carried away their belongings and now they needed urgent help.
Resident Saidgul told Pajhwok that the Badarzo village was flooded yesterday and people’s houses were destroyed.
He said many people had moved to safe places, but they lacked food and shelter. The government and aid agencies should provide them assistance as soon as possible, he demanded.
Recent rains and floods have caused financial losses of millions of afghanis to the people in Mianshin, Shah Walikot, Maroof, Arghistan, Arghandab, Spin Boldak, Shorabak and Takhta Pul districts besides Kandahar city.
Officials say floods destroyed 200 houses and 150 fruit orchards in the mentioned districts. However, so far no aid giving agency has assisted the flood victims.
