LASHKARGAH (Pajhwok): Hundreds of destitute families are being given cash assistance by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Lashkargah, the capital of southern Helmand province.
The process of distributing the cash assistance has been started and a total of 826 poor families will be given the aid.
Abdul Ghafor Durrani, director general of displaced families at Helmand’s Department of Refugees and Returnees, told Pajhwok that each family was being given 700 US dollars.
He said these displaced families suffered from economic problems and their houses had been destroyed during the war. The survey to indentify deserving families was conducted eight months ago, he added.
Sharifullah, a resident of Sangin district, who received the assistance, told Pajhwok that he was happy to receive the assistance and hoped the aid would meet most of people’s needs.
He said their area had been the front line of war for many years and their houses had been destroyed.
Ibrahim Jan, a resident of Nawzad district, who received the aid, said he was jobless and thus his family faced economic hardships. He said he would start some work with the money to get rid of dependence on others.
Previously, cash, food and non-food items have been distributed to poor families in different areas of Helmand.
