MAHMOOD RAQI (Pajhwok): Pine nuts yield has increased by 20 percent in two districts of central Kapisa province, an official said on Thursday.
Agriculture Department Director Mawlavi Rohullah Rohani said 336 tonnes of pine nuts collected from trees on 350 hectares of land in Nijrab and Alasai districts this year. The last year’s yield of the dry fruit was 280 tonnes.
According to Rohani, favorable weather condition and seasonal rains have increased the pine nuts yield.
Previously, the pine nuts were illegally exported to Pakistan and then the neighboring country exported it to other countries under own name, but the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan prevented the smuggling of pine nuts.
Based on information, a seven-kilogram pine nuts sold between 12,000 to 15,000 afghanis in Nijrab and Alasai districts of Kapisa.
Khairullah Amini, one of the farmers in Nijrab district who has 100 pine nuts trees, expressed happiness with the increase in the yield and said he could make a living from the fruits of this pine tree.
Qand Agha, a resident of Shinkai village of Alasai district, said 150 pine nuts trees produced the dry fruits worth 100,000 afghanis extra than last year.
Referring to the huge profit, he emphasized that the export must be carried out under the name of Afghanistan.
