Food for work program: Hundreds employed in Uruzgan

TIRINKOT (Pajhwok): As many as 820 men and 180 women have been employed in Khas Uruzgan district of central Uruzgan province under the food for work program.

The men and women will be given food items each month for nine months in exchange for cleaning rivers, canals and roads of their areas and for producing and raising chickens.

Mohammad Ghani Bilal, Uruzgan rural rehabilitation and development director, told Pajhwok Afghan News that 820 poor and needy men in Khas Uruzgan district were employed to clean rivers, canals and roads of their areas against food each month.

He added 180 poor women of the district will be trained in producing and raising chickens and they will be given food every month in exchange for this work. He said the project was being implemented with financial support of the Kandahar Refugee Organization (KRO).

Mohibullah Zahid, provincial KRO manager in Uruzgan, told Pajhwok that the men and women in Khas Uruzgan district will be distributed food items in exchange for work for nine months.

The men will clean natural streams, canals and roads of their area and the women will receive training in the production of chickens in their homes and they will be given required tools, he added.

According to him, every family will be given 100 kilograms of flour, 12 kilograms of pulses, 10 liters of ghee and one kilogram of salt per month.

The residents of Khas Uruzgan district expressed happiness over the project and urged the authorities to initiate more such programs.

Shamsullah, a resident of the district, told Pajhwok Afghan News he was happy to get food in exchange for cleaning the rivers, canals and roads of his area. He said the project should continue and should be launched in other districts as well.

Before this, the Afghan Development Association (ADA) also distributed relief goods people in Uruzgan in exchange for work.
