HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): A cultural centre in western Herat province has launched a book-reading programme to boost the capacity of children and teenagers.
Manizha Bahra, in charge of the reading initiative, said many problems in the country were linked to ignorance and lack of information.
It was necessary to promote knowledge in society, especially the future generation of the country, she believed.
About 30 children were currently present in one of their book-reading circles, she informed, saying efforts were underway to hone their learning skills.
Aqila, who has enrolled her two sisters in this programme, opined such initiatives could be effective in terms of enhancing children’s knowledge.
She asked all families to admit their children to such courses and thereby help them develop a taste for reading and attain prospects for a bright future.
In a chat with Pajhwok, Zainab Rasa, a student’s relative, also appreciated the step and urged the public and cultural centers to promote such programmes.
Fatima, a teacher at the cultural centre, said she had been conducting such programmes for children over the last three years and they had been fruitful.
Javed Zargham, director of information and culture, acknowledged the Abdul Wahid Bahra Cultural Centre, had always strived to promote the culture of reading and other identical programmes — a strong point of the province.
Zargham asked cultural institutions to promote the culture of reading in Herat.
