Doctor Salahuddin Ahadi, an official of the provincial hospital, told Pajhwok Afghan News: “We received up to 50 mentally ill patients on a daily basis during the past month and registered a total of 712 psychiatric cases”.

Ahadi said 367 of the patients were women and still 21 patients remained hospitalized receiving treatment.

He added they had a separate ward in the hospital for mentally-ill patients and a psychiatrist and his two assistants attended the patients.

Doctor Farid Sultani, the psychiatrist, said that poverty and violence were the main reason of mental illnesses among residents.

Sultani said: “It is very important to have self-confidence and consult a psychiatrist to treat such illnesses”.

Hoora, a patient from Takht area, told Pajhwok: “My economic condition is not good, my sons are doing odd jobs, whenever they travel somewhere for work, I become sad and suffer from mental stress”.
