Kunduz residents want reconstruction of destroyed schools

KUNDUZ CITY (Pajhwok): Some residents and schools officials in northern Kunduz province have demanded the reconstruction of destroyed schools.

They also urged the distribution of necessary equipment and text books for students.

Esa Khan, a school principal in Ali abad district, said his school was six kilometers away from district centre and has 180 students.

Esa Khan said the administrative structure including the teachers of this school is ten people, but now all its departments run by him and one other person and he has no teachers to teach.

“Off our total five subjects we have teacher for only one subject, there is no table, no building, no drinking water, no retaining wall. Off total 10 persons human resource strength only two persons are teaching and performed administrative roles as well,” he said.

It is not only this school that facing the lack of facilities such as lack of teaching materials, buildings and teachers, but other schools are also facing similar challenges.

Habibullah Haqmal, Chahar Seri School principal, in Khan Abad district, said: “We haven't had books in several years, people are strangers, they can't afford to buy books and booklets for their children, the school is in terrible condition, and there have been wars here. There was military base in this school, we ask the government and institutions to cooperate with us.”

Islamic Education Director Ghulam Rasool Haqqani emphasized resolution to these challenges.

He said: “With the establishment of current system, the restoration of schools was going smoothly in many areas. Institutions are cooperating with us in this area. The Islamic Emirate is also paying attention to the problems of books. The problem of lack of books will be solved next year. The process of hiring teachers continues since the month of Hamal, and the problems of teachers will be solved in the future”.

In recent years, due to wars, a number of schools in Kunduz have been damaged and many children have stopped going to school.
