PUL-I-KHUMRI (Pajhwok): Local officials in northern Baghlan province say that 2,400 people mostly women suffered psychologically in the past seven months.

Dr. Jawad Wadid, head of the psychological Department, told Pajhwok Afghan News last year 1,673 people affected psychologically in the first six months.

He said in the first seven months of the ongoing year, this number has reached to 2,400 people in which 80 percent of the patients are women.

He linked unemployment and poverty as the main reasons behind the surge in these problems.

“Women who comes here say that their husbands are not working and some say that they don’t have the money to pay rent and come to the hospital. The treatment of psychological problems required long time.”

According to Dr. Wadid, the number of psychological patients was higher in the province but they only registered patients who referred to the hospital for treatment.

He said nine women and three men had been brought to the hospital for treatment when they tried to commit suicide.

Mohammad Hassan, one of the psychological patient told Pajhwok Afghan News that he had been suffering from this problem from the past few months.

“Due to poverty I have been affected by this illness. Right now I don’t have money to purchase medicine and always think about it. If medicine are available in the state-run hospital they provide them but if not available then I don’t have the ability to purchase them from the market.”

Dr. Niyaz Mohammad Akhakhel, deputy head of the primary health services department, told Pajhwok Afghan News this year the number of psychological patients had declined.

He, however, said they were not comfortable and efforts had been taken to provide treatment to the patients.

This is worth mentioning that the number of psychological patients had surged in Herat province as well this year.
