Herat wheat yield goes up by 60pc this year

HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): The Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock Department says more than 590 metric tonnes of wheat has been harvested from irrigated and rain-fed lands in western Herat province this year.

Bashir Ahmad Ahmadi, an official of the department, told Pajhwok Afghan News the wheat had been produced by 180,000 hectares of land.

He said the yield showed a 60 percent increase this year. Most of the wheat was harvested from rain-fed lands in Kashk-i-Kohna, Rubat-i-Sangi, Gulran, Kohistan and Shindand districts.

Gul Ahmad, a farmer in Guzra district, told Pajhwok the wheat production had surged as a result of proper management of water from Salma dam.

The department said to boost the agriculture sector, refined seeds were provided to growers for cultivating quality crops.
