KUNDUZ CITY (Pajhwok): Residents of Sher Khan port in northern Kunduz province complain they have been lacking access to clean drinking water since long.
The residents say they fetch water from Amu river and the water takes 24 hours to purify and those who cannot bring water from the river buy a single jerry can of water for five afghanis.
Rahimullah, a resident of Sher Khan port, told Pajhwok that the river water was muddy and harmful to health.
According to him, local residents have been lacking access to clean water for many years and as a result they are facing serious problems.
He added: “We have been facing this problem for a long time. Sometimes the river water is clear, sometimes it is muddy. Almost 600 families live here. The people of the area cannot afford to buy clean water.”
Mohammad Alam, another resident of Sher Khan port, said: “We want the government to build a water reservoir for us.”
Matiullah Sayedza, director of Rural Rehabilitation and Development, acknowledged the problem and promised to address it.
“We acknowledge the problem of lack of access to safe drinking water in Sher Khan port and we pay attention to such problems, we have always tried to solve such issues and work honestly for the wellbeing of the people.”
