KABUL (Pajhwok): Last week, the ban on women higher education made headlines and sparked strong reaction at home and abroad, former President Hamid Karzai met some Afghan politicans in Turkey and discussed the importance of intra Afghan talks.

Casualties:

Eight people were killed in Afghanistan last week in different incidents of violence. Zabihullah Mujahid, spokesperson for the ‘Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan’ (IEA), said three Daesh inusrgents were killed and one held during security force operation. He did not say were the operation was conducted.

A group leader was killed in Faryab province, robbers killed one person in samangan and unknown gunmen have axed one person in Ghazni.

According to officials two armed Daesh rebels were killed in Kuna.

Eight people were killed and 34 others injured in different incidents of violence the previous week in the country

This comes that last year before regime change in the country, hundreds of civilians  and people fron conflicting sides were killed and injured in violent incidennts and clashes.

Postponment of girls’ education

Higher education ministry has postponed women higher education in Afghanistan till further notice.

In a statement, The Ministry of Higher Education (MoHE), said: “All public and private universities in the country are informed that based on the cabinet decision No. 28 women higher education is postponed till the next order.” It added universities should take immediate step in this regard.

The move comes at a time when girls schools above class 6th are already closed nationwide. Government move to ban women higher education sparket strong reaction at home and abroad.

Reaction from world

The Organisation of Islamic Countreis (OIC), UN, Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International, Qatar, UAE and Saudi Arabia have condemned the acting Afghan government decision to postpone women higher education.

Austrialia, Canada, France, Turkey, Germany, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Switzeland, UK, and US foreign ministers in a joint statement condemned the acting Afghan government decision to postpone womemn higher education and ban girls education above class 6th.

They asked Afghan government to reverse its decision and US warned against conseqances and added the move will further complicate the recognition issue of the IEA.

G7 foreign ministers on Thursday asked the Taliban authorities to reverse the ban on women attending university, saying the move may amount to “a crime against humanity.”

“Taliban policies designed to erase women from public life will have consequences for how our countries engage with the Taliban,” the ministers of the club of rich nations said in a statement, after holding virtual talks.

 The head of Al-Azhar University, Sheikh Ahmad Al-Tayeb, has expressed his concern about the ban on women’s university education in Afghanistan and asked the Afghan authorities to reconsider their decision.

The Ministry of Higher Education announced on Monday that higher education for girls in the country had been suspended until further notice.

Raction at home

According to reports former President Hamid Karzai, former President Ashraf Gani, former Peace Council Head Abdullah Abdullah, Jihadi leaders Abdul Rab Rasoul Sayyaf, Hizb-e-Islami Afghanistan Head Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, some criket stars and some former officials contradicted the Taliban decision to ban women higher education.

In reaction to this decision, some university teachers rendered resignation but higher education ministry said no teacher had resigned.

The Afghanistan National Olympic Committee Head Nazar Mohammad Motmain, Economic Affairs Head of the Foreign Minister Shafi Azam, Foreign Ministry Information Technology Head Khairullah Shinwari and some other IEA officials also critisied the move.

Political affairs experts in the country last week also demanded the postponement decision to be reversed and said the decision had no religious justification and would have consequances for the country.

 In Kabul, Nangarhar and Takhar provinces some students raised objection over the Higher Education Ministry decision to postpone women higher education.

Report showed that a group of women sent a letter to the UN asking for pressure on acting Afgan government to let women access higher education in the country.

But Higher Education Minister Mawlavi Nida Mohammad Nadim during a television talk show said without a Moharram family member grils traveling from one province to another, violation of Hijab, co-education and some higher education disciplines not suitable for women were the main reasons behind immediate postponement of women higher education in the country.

He said they have no issue with Afghan women and their right to education, adding that efforts were on a solution in the light of Sharia law would find to address the issue.

Hamid Karzai’s meetings:

After the fall of past government, former Presidennt Hamid Karzai travelled to the UAE on December 04 and from there he went to Germnay and Turkey. Earlier there were reports that Hamid Karzai was not allowed by the acting government to travel aborad.

During Karzai’s trip to the UAE, Acting Defence Minister Mullah Mohammad Yaqoub Mujahid and US Special Representative for Afghanistan Thomas West also travelled to the AE.

In Turkey, Karzai met with Karim Khalili, head of the Wahdat-i-Islami Party, Mohammad Mohaqiq, head of the Wahdat Islami Mardum Afghanistan party head and some other individuals. They discussed currently issues and termed talks the only way to resolve differences among the people of Afghanistan.

Karza also met Turkey Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu who pledged continued support to peace and stability in Afghanistan.

Respect to Afghan refugees rights

Afghanistan Embassy in Pakistan said that 2,000 Afghans had been arrested in the past three months in which 500 had been freed. Pakistani officials assured that issues pertaining to the arrested of Afghan citizens would be resolved.

According to reports some Afghans had been arrested in Pakistan due to the lack of documents and sent to jail.

Reports showed that the Amnesty International had expressed concern over the situation of Afghan migrants in Pakistan and asked the Pakistani government to issue visa reuglations to Afghan so they could have access to essential services.
