KABUL (Pajhwok): The United States has committed massive corruption in Afghanistan, alleges former president Hamid Karzai.
In an interview published on Tuesday, the long-serving ex-president took full responsibility for the corruption and bribes in the delivery of services in his country.
“But the big contracts, big corruption, in hundreds of millions of dollars or millions of dollars, was clearly a United States of America thing,” he commented.
Speaking to The Washington Post, he assailed the US for Afghanistan’s plight, saying the war in Afghanistan “was not our war”.
He was not a US partner in the war against Afghan villages and homes, the ex-president insisted. “I changed from the moment I recognised that this war … is actually a war against the Afghan people.”
It was for that reason he hailed the Taliban as brothers, he argued, saying he had made the right decision to stay in Afghanistan even after the movement came to power.
“I was not sure of my own safety [after the Taliban came to power]. But I would have never left and I will never leave. This is my country,” he maintained.
