KABUL (Pajhwok): The Beggars Collection Committee says about 22,125 beggars –1,646 of them professional panhandlers – have been rounded up in Kabul so far.
The beggar collection process that began on August 13 is still ongoing in Kabul. Able-bodied male beggars capable of working will be hired for different jobs.
The deputy prime minister’s office says the collected beggars included 2,545 men, 899 women and 1,646 professionals.
The source said of 11,431 collected women, 4,839 were deserving beggars and 6,592 were professional beggars.
They included 8149 children and of them 3,202 were poor while 4,883 of them were identified as professional and 64 others without guardians.
“After the completion of biometric, the begging children are enrolled to kindergartens of the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs, and they are also provided with education and training. The deserving beggars receive continuous financial assistance from the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan,” the statement informed.
