LASHKARGAH (Pajhwok): Electricity supply to southern Kandahar and Helmand provinces has been cut off after the water reservoir of Kajaki Dam has declined, an official said on Friday.

Mawlavi Mohammad Qasim Riaz, director of Information and Cultural Affairs Department, told Pajhwok Afghan News that they decided to cut electricity supply from Kajaki Dam after the level of water in its reservoir had dropped.

He, however, said when there is surge in the level of water, electricity to Kandahar and Helmand would be resumed.

Kajaki Dam has the capacity of producing 151MW electricity which is supplied to Kandahar City and Helmand province.

Mohammad Ismael, the resident of Lashkargha City told Pajhwok Afghan News that the non-availability of electricity created problems for the people.

“Fuel rates are high, people are unable to buy. People get water from wells and for this purpose they should have electricity to get water. In Mosques people have no access to water for ablution.”

Qudratullah, another resident of Lashkargha, said the none-availability of electricity caused problems for common people as well as industrialists who are unable to run their factories.

This comes that people are facing problems in other parts of the country as well due to drought and other issues.
