FAIZABAD (Pajhwok): At least 17 people have died from a virus similar to Coronavirus (Covid-19) in the Pamir Kalan area of Wakhan district in northeastern Badakhshan province, an official said on Saturday.

Badakhshan Health Department Director Qari Atiqullah Faizi told Pajhwok Afghan News a pandemic similar to Covid19 had recently spread in Pamir Kalan areas from the past one year.

He said 17 people, including women, children and elders, have died from this pandemic so far.

“Due to heavy snowfall and blockade of roads, a medical team had been dispatched to the area through Tajikistan. They have some medicine and necessary medical equipment with themselves.”

Dr. Khalilurahman Ibrahimkhel, health official of Agha Khan Medical Service, said two vehicles with some medical equipment, logistics and five doctors had been sent to the area.

In some villages of Yawan district people suffered from respiratory disease. So far 906 people, including women and children, had been provided with treatment.

He said mobile health teams provided treatment to 194 people in Shahr-i-Buzarga district while two people were died.

Haji Sultan Mohammad, the resident of Pamir, said: “From the past one month a virus like Covid-19 had erupted in our area its symptoms are flue, fever, pain in the body. 21 people have died from this pandemic so far.”

He was thrilled by the arrival of medical team in the area and added situation had been controlled now.

He said during this virus individuals suffer from fever, pain in body and other issues.
