KABUL (Pajhwok): The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA) has urged the United Nations to ensure the delivery of humanitarian assistance to Afghans under all circumstances.
Deputy Prime Minister Maulvi Abdul Salam Hanafi issued the call at a meeting with UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Martin Griffiths.
A statement from the deputy premier’s office quoted Griffiths as saying the aim of his visit to Afghanistan to run the UN humanitarian mission in a better way.
The UN has sought this year 4.6 billion dollars in aid to 28 million Afghans, the largest appeal for a single country in the world, according to the visiting dignitary.
Griffiths underlined the role of women workers in delivering assistance to women and children.
Hanafi hailed UN efforts for attracting aid for Afghans and said his country had suffered decades of war, with many women becoming widows and countless families losing their loved ones.
As a result of past conflict, Hanafi deplored, Afghanistan’s infrastructure was destroyed and basic facilities were not rebuilt.
Many positive actions had been taken by the Islamic Emirate, including the restoration of national security, a general amnesty, banning the cultivation, processing and smuggling of drugs.
He went on to say courts had been given autonomy families of martyrs and the disabled helped in addition to the rehabilitation of drug addicts.
Women enjoy special rights and status in Islam, according to the deputy premier, who said: “We hope issues that exist in this respect will be addressed through understanding.”
