JALALABAD (Pajhwok): Nearly 50,000 patients were allowed to enter Pakistan through the Torkham crossing for treatment without passport and visa during the past six months, an official said on Wednesday.

These patients travelled to Pakistan without visa and passport under a special procedure and agreement between the two countries, officials say.

Torkham Commissioner Maulvi Sidiqullah Khalid said many facilities had been provided in areas of transit and transportation and corruption had been done away with and as a result government’s revenue had increased.

He said 800 to 1000 transit trucks crossed Torkham gate on a daily basis, which generated  30 million afghanis revenue. Passengers have also been provided facilities including waiting rooms, a special passage and others, he added.

He said dozens of patients daily travelled to Pakistan without visa under an agreement between the two countries.

During the past six months alone, he said, 49,800 patients went to Pakistan without passports and visas.

He added: “A special commission of the Nangarhar Public Health Department examines dozens of patients every day and patients whose treatment is not possible in Afghanistan, their names are written in a list which is then handed over to the Pakistani authorities.”

Thousands of people daily travel to Pakistan through the Torkham gate on the Durand Line between the two countries.
