KABUL (Pajhwok): The Biden administration has slapped fresh visa restrictions on current and former members of ‘Islamic Emirate Afghanistan’ and others believed to be involved in curbing the rights of women and girls in Afghanistan.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced on Wednesday the restrictions also applied to non-state security group members and others involved in trampling on women’s rights.

In a statement from the State Department, Blinken noted: “The Taliban’s most recent edicts ban women from universities and from working with NGOs…”

The decrees tightened the caretaker government’s previous measures that closed secondary schools to girls and limited the ability of women and girls to participate in Afghan society and economy, he said.

Without naming the IEA members who have been sanctioned, Blinken claimed: “Through these decisions, the Taliban have again shown their disregard for the welfare of the Afghan people.”

He went on to say the IEA could not expect the respect and support of the international community until they respect human rights and fundamental freedoms of all Afghans, including women and girls.

In late December 2022, the caretaker government announced bans on women attending universities and working with local and foreign NGOs.

The top US diplomat continued: “We continue to coordinate closely with allies and partners around the world on an approach that makes clear to the Taliban that their actions will carry significant costs…”
