ATLANTA  (Pajhwok): Eighty Afghan nationals were killed in Monday’s earthquakes that rattled Turkey and Syria, the Afghanistan Embassy in Ankara confirmed on Friday.

The two successive strong earthquakes shook southeastern Turkey and western Syria, killing more than 16,000 people and wounding around 65,000 others in Turkey and 5,000 people in Syria.

Mohammad Mussadiq Faqiri, deputy of the Afghan embassy in Ankara, told Pajhwok Afghan News unfortunately 80 Afghans died in the tragedy. He added the dead Afghans were laid to rest in Turkey with the help of local residents.

Faqiri said a delegation comprising embassy diplomats, civil society activists and ordinary Afghans had been sent to the earthquake-hit areas to collect accurate information about the Afghans.

Turkey’s Anadolu news agency, quoting President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, reported that 19,000 people have been killed and more than 70,000 people injured in the earthquakes.
