KABUL (Pajhwok): A four-day anti-polio vaccination campaign targeting 10 million children under five year age across Afghanistan kicked off on Monday, United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNCIEF) said.

UNICEF’s media official Kamal Shah Sayed told Pajhwok Afghan News the polio vaccination campaign kicked off in 34 provinces of the country today.

He said vitamin A drops would be given to children aged between six months and five years to boost their immunity.

According to him, the polio eradication program in Afghanistan is implemented under the umbrella of the Ministry of Public Health and the main task of UNICEF is to accelerate public awareness in the society.

Since the beginning of the 2023, no positive case of polio had been recovered in the country, but this virus had been identified in the eastern part of the country, so there is a threat of the spread of this disease.

UNICEF conducted a polio vaccination campaign in the four eastern provinces (Nangarhar, Laghman, Kunar and Nuristan) on the February 20 and targeted 1.2 million children under five years.

Last year, nine police vaccination campaign conducted in the county and it decreased the cases of polio.
