Dire financial straits force man to commit suicide

MAIMANA (Pajhwok): A 35-year-old man has committed suicide by hanging himself due to severe economic problems in the Qarghan district of northern Faryab province, an official said on Saturday.

Tajuddin Omari, the district’s administrative chief, said: “35-year-old Sayed Ahmad, a resident of Chaharbagh Kamangar village, hanged himself to death due to economic and family problems.”

He added the victim’s father had borrowed $3,500 and the lender filed a case against them in the court. Sayed Ahmad, who was haunted by tensions, eventually committed suicide.

Mohammad Shakir, a neighbour of the deceased, confirmed taunts from the lender forced Ahmad, whose father died two years ago, to take his life.

He said the victim had engaged twice but both his engagements had to be cancelled. Ahmad engaged a third time six months ago.

He added the father of Ahmad had borrowed money from several people and lenders would knock daily at the gate to his house. However, the man he had no money to repay his father’s debts and committed suicide.

Qari Mohammad Gul, a local representative, also linked Ahmad’s suicide to economic hardships.
