KABUL (Pajhwok): A meeting involving 30 political figures from opposition groups is due to take place today in Vienna, the capital of Austria, today.

The participants will confer on promoting peace and reconciliation in the country under a democratically elected government,

The BBC reported some Afghan opposition leaders, former officials, members of parliament and ex- diplomats would attend the meeting.

Ahmad Massoud, the National Resistance Front (NRF) chief, and other rivals of the caretaker government are to take part the two-day meeting.

Meanwhile, NRF tweeted its delegation had already reached for Vienna to participate in the talks.

Wolfgang Petritsch, an official of the Austrian Institute for International Affairs, said the objective was to discuss demands of the Afghan people for peace and understanding under a democratic government.

He added: “There can be no peace in Afghanistan without a comprehensive constitution, protecting the interests of all ethnic and religious groups and fair elections under international supervision.

A similar gathering was held last year in Vienna where some political figures from Afghanistan participated.

The current acting government in Kabul is yet to comment on the gathering in Vienna, but its spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid had said about last year’s meeting that the Afghans knew the participants had already been tested.

Officials of the interim government have repeatedly said the current administration is broad-based and that they are trying to make it even more inclusive.
