Afghan civil societies seek participation in Doha meeting

KABUL (Pajhwok): Afghanistan’s Civil Society Organizations have demanded their participation in the upcoming Doha meeting and any negotiations with the de facto Afghan authorities.

A number of civil society organisations in an open letter to the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres demanded that a roadmap to recognize the incumbent Afghan government should include Afghan actors from diverse backgrounds.

“We believe that this conversation should include Afghan actors of diverse backgrounds so that the process has local buy-in and the dialogue should continue beyond Doha.”

The later added that Afghanistan was going through a critical juncture in its history, the United Nations and its member states are showing immense moral courage to raise the question of a roadmap to recognition of the Taliban as the legitimate government of our country.

“We, the civil society in Afghanistan, have not only witnessed but have also influenced the situation in the last 20 months of the Taliban rule.”

The most important role we have played, though, has been our constant engagement with the de-facto authorities, which has allowed us to negotiate basic freedoms and continue our humanitarian, development, and peace-building programs.”
