KABUL (Pajhwok): Health experts have warned against the immoderate use of carbonated and non-carbonated soft drinks while it’s use and production had surged during recent years.
The production of carbonated and non-carbonated soft drinks had increased in the country in recent years.
Youth mostly adhered to the use of carbonated and non-carbonated drinks while medical experts warned that excessive use of these drinks could have dangerous consequences for individual’s health.
Currently in Kabul markets different types of these drinks — Resha, Monster, Cola, Fanta, Ab Anar Shifa, Happy, Carabao, Hit, Redbull, Ginseng, etc — were available in Kabul markets and youth were the highest clients of these products.
Zahra, the resident of Taimani area of capital Kabul told Pajhwok Afghan news: “Ginseng energy drink is my favorite one, I always drink it and gets more energy.”
She drink one each day and said she witnessed no side effect from the energy drink.
Fahimullah, another youth who is fond of drinking energy drinks said: “My uncle drinks Ginseng from over the years and he suffered no health issue.”
Mohmmad Romal, the resident of Khirkhana area, said: “Three days back when I stopped drinking energy drink I suffered a huge health issue. In the past I was drinking too much of these energy drinks.”
He said he suffered from stomach, body pain and other problems and doctors linked all of them with the excessive use of energy drinks.
Madina, 17, the resident of Kart-i-Parwan, area said: “I have stomach issue everyone told me not to refrain from the use of carbonated drinks but I have been addicted now and could not resists without drinking one each day.”
Jalil, 45, said: “I suffered liver problem from the excessive use of energy drinks and now I gets treatment.”
Dr. Syed Farid Shah Rafie, an internal diseases expert in the Wazir Mohammad Akbar Khan Hospital, said: “Carbonated and non-carbonated soft drinks, due to their high sugar content caused some diseases in those who use them excessively.”
He said due to the presence of high sugar in its composition the excessive use of these drinks decay teeth, cause diabetes, kidney stones and other dangerous health problems in the human body.
Dr. Faridullah Umari, another internal diseases expert in Melli Hospital, said some drinks are sold at a higher price in the market; all of them have their negative impacts in the human body.
He said excessive use of energy drinks caused weight increase, damage teeth, bone, high blood pressure, heart diseases and diabetes.
He added: “Carbonated drinks could not provide energy, there may be some but they are limited and would have approval from a credible organ, In addition to carbonated, some non-carbonated drinks could be also dangerous for the health.”
Dr. Umari termed it vital to increase public awareness regarding the harmful impact of energy drinks and said media role was vital in this regard asking them to refrain from publishing announcements that draw people’s attention to the use of soft drinks.
