KHOST CITY (Pajhwok): The residents of Alishero Tarezio district in southeastern Khost province demanded the provision of health services while officials pledge to operationalise eight already constructed clinics in the province.
Efforts are underway for the operationalisation of eight clinics built few years ago in southern Khost province, an official said.
These clinics were built few years ago by the past government in different parts of the provinces.
Of these eight clinics, two were built in the Traizo Alishero district — one was in the Sinkhor area and another in the Spinkeuborio area.
Local tribal elders said in the past government they often demanded that these clinics should be operationalized but their demand was ignored.
They said government spent millions of Afghani on the construction of these clinics and if they are not operationalized the facilities may be damaged.
Haji Mirza Gul, a tribal elder told Pajhwok Afghan News, only 5,000 families lived in the Tarezio area and they was no other health facility without the Alishero central clinic.
He added considering the population of the area the currently existing clinic could not meet the demand of local people adding two more clinics should be operationalized.
“We have been offered promises but the Spinkhor clinic was not made active, government has not resources to operationalized and sent doctors to the clinic, this is the central point for three districts and we want the clinic here to be made operational,” the tribal elder added.
He said local residents have been struggling with economic hardship and they could not afford to pay for the medic.
Haji Nazir, another tribal elder,, said that the Spinkhor area was situated 30 kilometres to the east from Khost City close to Duran Line.
He added the residents of locality have grave economic problems and was unable to take their children to private clinics.
He added buildings for the clinics in Spinkhor and Spoin Boraio areas had been constructed years back but it yield no benefit to the local residents.
“We take our ill family members, maternity patients to district centre where health services were not up to the mark. We have a clinic in our own area which is not functional, we demand health service at our doorstep,” he added.
Nazir Roshan, a civil society activist in Khost province, said state run health services were weak and being ignored.
He added currently there was no enough medicines and personnel in the district health centers to address public health issues in time.
“Most clinics in the far-flung areas of the country were non-functional, even if patients go to a clinic for treatment, they could not get proper treatment or medicines.”
Khost Health Department Director Dr. Fazal Karim Mandozai acknowledged to Pajhwok Afghan News that eight clinics in Khost province were not active.
He added 20 percent work on the clinics was remaining, adding that it was the reason why these clinics are not made operational.
“We asked the Ministry of Public Health to complete the remaining construction work and pressed to allot personnel for these clinics in for the ongoing solar year as well.”
He said after the take by the ‘Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan’ (IEA) mobile health teams had been dispatched to the areas where people had limited access to health facilities.
