2 prisoners died of suffocation in Nimroz prison

KABUL (Pajhwok): Two prisoners have died while cleaning the sewage well of the prison in southwestern Nimroz province, according to a well-placed source on Thursday.

In addition, a number of prisoners went on hunger strike in the prison while the provincial Information and Cultural Affairs Department rejected the claim.

Aghaz Wali, one of the prisoners during a telephonic conversation, told Pajhwok Afghan News: “Prison officials sent two of the prisoners down to the sewage well to clean it but they died of suffocation, there the prisoners have no electricity, no proper food is provided and their future of grim so they decided to go hunger strike from yesterday.”

He said one of the prisoners was in the hospital who also suffered suffocation during the cleanliness of sewage well.

The prisoners of two blocks who are 300 went of hunger strike due to the uncertainty surrounding them.

Aghaz Wali said he was imprisoned in Iran and the neighboring country recently transferred him to Afghanistan and from the past three months he had been in prison in Afghanistan.

Mohammad, another prisoner, also confirmed to Pajhwok that two prisoners died of suffocation while cleaning the sewage well.

Information Department Director Mufti Habibullah Elham rejected the claim and said: “Some biased media outlets have published the story regarding the suffocation of two prisoners and hunger strike of a large number of prisoners in Nirmor which is totally false and not true.”

The matter was shared with the media wing of the Interior Ministry but there was no response from the authorities.
