LASHKARGAH (Pajhwok): Residents of Nahar Saraj district of southern Helmand province say the only school in the district has been destroyed in the past wars.

Nahar Saraj is a newly created district in the administrative structure of Helmand after the Islamic Emirate’s return to power.

Some residents of the district say their children are deprived of education due to lack of schools.

However, Helmand education officials, without commenting on the complaint of Nahar Saraj district residents, say they have launched efforts to provide educational facilities to the people of the entire province.

Mohammad Wali, a resident of Nahar Saraj district, told Pajhwok: “The lack of schools is our biggest problem, thousands of our children are deprived of education.”

Syed Wali, a resident of Yakawlang area of the district, said a community-based school was set up in their area, but it was wrapped up after a short period of time.

According to him, there is no school or local class in their area.

Gul Mohammad, another resident, said the only schools in the district had been destroyed in the past wars and schools in nearby district were far-away from them.

Helmand education director Maulvi Mohammad Auz Ansari did not say anything about the lack of schools in Nahar Saraj district, but confirmed that many schools in some districts of the province had been completely or partially destroyed during the previous wars and now needed to be repaired.

He added: “We repaired 17 schools in the last six months in the province, 57 schools are currently under construction and we plan to repair 102 more schools in the new year, so the problem of lack of schools in Nahar Saraj and other districts will be solved.”

More than four decades of war in the country has badly affected several sectors, including education, of the country.
