ASADABAD (Pajhwok): Some pillars of a bridge that connects Narang and Sarkano districts of eastern Kunar province have been damaged and the bridge is about to collapse.

Traffic on the bridge has been also suspended due to its possible collapse, Public Works Department officials said.

Engineer MunibullahGullabzoi, survey and design engineer at the Public Works Department, told Pajhwok Afghan News the Pashad Bridge that links Sarkano and Narang districts was built by the previous government.

He said some pillars of the bridge had been destroyed by water and traffic flow had been also suspended.

Gullabzoi said: “The bridge was built by America forces with poor quality. As the water level increased, some of its pillars were destroyed so this bridge was closed for traffic”.

He said the condition of the bridge had been discussed with officials of the provincial Public Works Department and hoped the bridge would be reconstructed soon.

According to Gullabzoi, if the bridge is not repaired on time, it may further damage due to rising water level.

He said the bridge was used by thousands of families of Narang and Sarkano districts and if it collapsed, local people would face serious problems.

Javaid Sapi, former member of the National Assembly (Wolesi Jirga) in the previous government, also wrote on his Facebook page that the destroyed pillars of the Pashad Bridge must be repaired as soon as possible.

Sapi said: “One of the pillars of Pashad village’s bridge that connects Narang and Sarkano district has went deep into the ground and this bridge is closed for traffic”.

He urged relevant officials of the acting government to repair the bridge or else it would collapse.

Residents of Narankg and Sarkano districts also urged the government to repair the bridge as soon as possible.

Malik Khan Bacha, a tribal elder of Sarkano district, told Pajhwok: “Thousands of families use Pashad bridge, we have asked the officials of the previous and the current governments to repair the damaged parts of this bridge, but no one listened our voice”.

Samsor, a resident of Narang district, said the government should find the construction company that had built the bridge and bring its officials to justice.

Ha said: “This is the result of corruption in the previous government that projects were implemented with poor quality, there was no supervision over their work, that is why the life of such projects is too short and now they face destruction”.

According to information of the provincial Public Works Department, the Pashad bridge is 210 meters long and it connects Narang and Sarkano districts of Kunar province.

The bridge was built at the time of previous government by the Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT) of the United States troops.

Public Works Department officials also said that the bridge was not officially handed over to their department that was why they had no enough information about its design and cost.
