Baghlan seamstresses seek market for their products

PUL-I-KHUMRI (Pajhwok): Some seamstresses in northern Baghlan province have demanded markets for their products saying hundreds of girls were busy sewing clothes.

Fatima Hamidi, head of a tailoring factory in the province, told Pajhwok Afghan News a large number of women turned to tailoring after ban on schools.

She said earlier around 800 girls worked in the factory but due to the lack of proper market their workforces was on the decline.

“If the situation remained the same, we have to close the factory,” she warned.

Yalda Hamidi, the assistant head of the factory, said if the government and other organizations did not provide support to them they may be forces to shut the factory.

“There is need for market exploration, exhibitions and other efforts to explore market, if this not happened we have to close the factory,” she warned.

Laila Kazami, head of another factory in the province, said after the fall of past government and closure of girls schools she created the tailoring factory.

“Earlier, girls come to the work with zeal and interest but recently the market had declined, if the situation persisted this and other factories would be closed,” she said.

Sahela Rezae, a seamstress in Baghlan, said she was in class ninth when the past government removed and since then she started tailoring.

Beside sewing clothes she learned embroidery and some other arts.

Some other seamstresses expressed similar views and asked the government to take steps in addressing their worries.

Mawlavi Ezzatullah Mir Haqqani, a senior officer at the Information and Cultural Affairs Department, said government fully supported women handicraft and other products.

“The ‘Islamic Emirate’ is committed to promote Afghan culture, we pledged support to these women, few months earlier we organized an exhibition and would organize another exhibition to promote their products, all these things cannot be done swiftly there are some problems,’” he said.

This comes that earlier, some people connected with carpet industry also complained against the decline of carpets market in the country.
