PARAKH (Pajhwok): The Agriculture Department in central Panjsher province has identified 39 varieties of medical herbs naturally grown in the province, an official said on Thursday.

Information Director Mawlavi Nasrullah Malakzada told Pajhwok Afghan News the Natural Resources section of the Agriculture Department identified these herbs in the Stul, Anaba, Rakha, Dara Apshar, Paryan, Hisar-i-Awal districts and provincial capital.

Some of these herbs are called Hing, Saj, Srash, Kharmarghilan, Larwak, Nana, Lashmak, Panerak, Ghoghan, Barbo, Gazanda, Samaruq, Zera, Zarkash, Gul Barfi, Shatar, Gul Gawazban, Lali Khar, Seer Kohi, Drona, Pansh Angosht, Balak, Espand, Sherin Peyaz, Peyaz Kohi, Khena Khaw, Rawash and Kamal.

He said according to the survey 6,549 hectares of land in the province was covered by natural medical plants and its annual yield is estimated at 15,390 kilograms which worth 15 million afs.

Sher Ali Razi, General Director of New Technology Department, said the use of medicine made of natural medical herbs had declined in Panjsher but in the far-flung areas of the country plants were still used for medication.

The lack of modern health facilities — hospitals, clinks — and deteriorated economic situation in far-flung areas forced people to use natural plants for medication, he added.

Some local residents who used these medicines for treatment termed these herbs effective for health.

Zakirullah Khan, the resident of Qabzan village in Rakha district used the Darona herb for the treatment of stomachache. He said natural plants treated most of illness and most people in the far-flung areas of Panjsher still used these medicines.

“Even currently, the Darona plant available in the mountains heights was used for the treatment of different illness. Most people used it for stomachache and personally I used this herb at home and it is very effective.”

Bibi Aeysha, an elderly woman from Piyawosh village of Rakha district who still used Gazanda herb for the treatment of joints pain said this herb provided her with relief for sometimes.
