Given the risk of civilian harm from such unexploded munitions, the White House said on Friday, it had delayed decision for as long as it could.
More than 100 countries around the globe have banned cluster ordnance contain multiple small bombs that could inflict considerable harm on ordinary people, according to the BBC.
