ZARANJ (Pajhwok): Harvested agriculture products deceased by 50 percent this year comparing to the amount of production obtained last year in southwestern Nimroz province, an official said on Tuesday.
Agriculture and Irrigation Department Director Mawlavi Abdul Khaliq Hakimullah told Pajhwok Afghan News that last year 95,000 hectares land of total 1,996,706 hectares irrigated land was cultivated which produced 1,560,948 tonnes of agriculture products.
He said this year 42,016 hectares of land had been cultivated which would produce 791,092 tonnes of agriculture products.
He linked decline in agriculture products with drought, lack of rainfall, freezing cold in winter and season wind.
Abdul Rauf, one of the farmers from the Nad Ali village of Zaranj City, said besides continued drought, lack of water and late winds also inflicted losses on farmers.
He added wind and storm every year inflicted losses one people but this year winds and storms were more severe.
“I will not be able to irrigate my land due to strong wind, the drought, the 120-day winds, and the freezing temperatures of last winter killed and destroyed our agriculture, most of the farmers in this province say that their yields have decreased.”
Yar Mohammad, a farmer from Chahar Burjak, district said that wind destroyed most of the crops which were growing and inflicted losses on farmers.
“It is not a strange thing, cultivation and agriculture produced no results, in the middle of year due to drought our fields and crops are destroyed, the severity of the storm also destroy our crops,” he said.
Farmers in Nimroz demanded assistances and instruction regarding advanced methods of irrigation.
