HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): Some thread producers in western Herat province have complained against the ban on thread export and said if the situation persisted they will have to shut down their factories.

They said that the ban on thread export caused decline in the price of thread in Herat as well.

Syed Hassan Hussaini, in-charge of a thread factory in Herat, said around 2,600 people were employed in their factory who arranged their expenses from this way.

He said halt of thread export outside the country hampered their business and if the export did not resumed they are forced to shut their factories.

“The thread we sold for 600 afs, nobody purchased it now from us for 350 afs, we have two 2,600 workers, when our product is not sold than we face stagnation and we have to close the gates of our factories,” he said.

Jamaluddin Tahiri, head of the Jalaban Union said from the past one year the process of thread export had been stopped.

He said the thread is required for the local carpet production therefore its export had been stopped.

Mohammad Yousf Amin, the executive director of the provincial Chamber of Commerce and Investment, said that the Carpet Union had requested the use of local thread in carpeting making and there was no need for its export.

Due to this reason the export of thread without the permission of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry is not allowed.

Mah Bibi, one of the thread factory workers, said the government should take necessary steps for the support of thread production industry.

She said with the continued stagnation of the market and the tightening of business conditions, more than thousands of families’ breadwinners will lose their jobs, and this will have a direct negative impact on their lives.

Nisar Ahmad Elyas, the governor spokesperson, said after the takeover of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, export to the foreign countries had surged.

He said its living example was the export of pomegranate juice from Herat to the US.

He added the issue of halt to the thread export would be investigated by the local administration.

Support for the export of domestic products and productions in all fields will continue until more opportunities are provided for its export to foreign countries.
