20,000 animals being vaccinated against PPR in Nangarhar

JALALABAD (Pajhwok): A campaign has been launched to vaccinate 20,000 animals against goat plague or Peste des petits ruminants (PPR) disease in 13 districts of eastern Nangarhar province.

The provincial Department of Agriculture and Livestock in a statement sent to Pajhwok Afghan News said the drive kicked off today.

The statement quoted agriculture director Maulvi Abdul Sattar Mohammad as saying the Holland Committee for Afghanistan had provided 20,000 Goat Plague vaccine doses.

The vaccine is being administered to animals in Dara-i-Noor, Hesarak, Sherzad, Khogyani, Sorkhrud, Pachiragam, Rodat, Haska Mina, Achin, Nazyan, Shinwari and Dur Baba districts.

Sattar added the vaccination will prevent diseases in small animals and save livestock owners from economic losses.

Earlier, the Holland Committee for Afghanistan had administered PPR vaccine to thousands of animals in different districts of Nangarhar.

Goat plague disease was first seen in Africa in 1942 and is currently seen in Africa, India, the Middle East and Afghanistan and a number of other regions, affecting small animals.
