PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): The Pak-Afghan Joint Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PAJCCI) has voiced its concern over the snail-paced processing of vehicles at Torkham.
PAJCCI Chairman Muhammad Zubair Motiwala urged the inspector-general of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Frontier Corps to take note of the slow processing of vehicles carrying empty containers.
Complaints were being received from members about the stoppage and slow release of vehicles loaded with empty containers at Torkham, he wrote in a letter to the IG FC and Ministry of Commerce secretary.
Due to delays, he noted, the number of stuck-up containers was constantly rising at the crossing point.“If this slowdown continues, Afghan Transit Trade (ATT) and bilateral business ties will be affected significantly.”
With more than 2,000 Pakistani trucks stuck in Afghanistan, transport fares are increasing due to a shortage of vehicles.
Detention charges (120$ -140$) are also accumulated on a daily basis on every container, affecting Pakistani and Afghan entities engaged in transit and bilateral trade, Motiwala added.
Meanwhile, PAJCCI Director Ziaul Haq Sarhadi also complained the business community was facing problems due to the slow clearance of vehicles at Torkham.
He urged the Pakistan Customs, National Logistic Cell, FC and other departments to find a viable solution to the problem, hindering the smooth running of business affairs.
