KABUL (Pajhwok): Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) Secretary General Jan Egeland says emergency aid alone cannot address long term needs in Afghanistan.
On his X page, Egeland wrote: “Senior humanitarian leaders are meeting to discuss Afghanistan aid today. The situation remains extremely difficult, but our Afghan female and male aid workers are able to provide direct assistance to women and men in great need across the country.”
He said NRC projects were delivering principled aid in spite of adversity, but aid groups were increasingly underfunded.
Egeland added: “We need more foreign diplomats to return to Kabul and help fight for human rights and humanitarian principles.”
He recalled that the emergency aid along could not solve the enormous long-term needs. Donors must commit to sustained funding and the return of development assistance.
The Afghans needed more than ever the collective engagement of the international community, he concluded.
