ATLANTA (Pajhwok): The United States and European Union have discussed the current situation in Afghanistan with Pakistan.

US Special Representative for Afghanistan Thomas West met Pakistan’s caretaker Foreign Minister Jalil Abbas Jilani on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.

"We discussed shared security interests, the imperative to support Afghan women and girls’ rights, and the status of humanitarian support in Afghanistan.," West wrote on his X account.

Separately, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Josep Borrell also exchanged views with the Pakistan foreign minister.

Borrell tweeted that they followed up on the Geneva conference on Pakistan floods & discussed tackling climate change.

He said particular focus of the meeting was on Afghanistan and the worrying situation of women and girls in that country.

The US and EU representatives met Jilani as Pakistan’s special representative for Afghanistan held talks in Kabul with Foreign Minister Maulvi Amir Khan Muttaqi.

The Pakistani envoy’s unannounced visit to Kabul took place days after the Torkham crossing gate was kept closed by Islamabad for nine days in a row after a clash two weeks ago.
