KABUL (Pajhwok): The UN Security Council has snubbed a Russian proposal for a resolution on the escalating conflict between Israel and Palestine, a media report said on Tuesday.
Russia, China, the UAE, Gabon and Mozambique voted in favour of the proposal, but the ballots were not sufficient for its approval, TASS news agency reported.
It added the US, France, the UK and Japan opposed the proposal, while Albania, Brazil, Ecuador, Ghana, Malta, Switzerland, Ecuador abstained.
After the vote, Russia’s Permanent Representative Vasily Nebenzya branded the powerful UN Security Council as a hostage to ambitions of Western countries.
The envoy was quoted as saying: "This is the only reason why it failed to send a clear and strong collective signal aimed at deescalating the situation."
US diplomat Linda Thomas-Greenfield said her country voted against the resolution because it failed to denounce Hamas.
