KABUL (Pajhwok): The central bank has torched old notes worth more than 541 million afghanis in the presence of senior officials in western Herat province.

In a statement Da Afghanistan Bank (DAB) said the worn-out notes had been set on fire under Articles 39 and 42 of the DAB Law in the presence of a high-level delegation on Tuesday.

Noor Ahmad Agha, first deputy head of the central bank, said the process of collecting old banknotes and replacing them into new ones had been launched to facilitate public transactions.

Banknotes rapidly became old because people do not use ATM cards and counting of money with greasy hands and keeping cash in houses, he explained.

Agha asked people to pay attention to the protection of banknotes in commercial transactions to prevent them rapidly getting old.

On Oct 23 and 24, the central bank had torched old banknotes worth 180.4 million afghanis in southern Kandahar province and on Oct 29, worth more than 919m afs in western Herat province.
